Largo CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Exercise the Quadratus Lumborum

The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on the left and right side of the abdominal wall. It’s a deep muscle and usually thought of as a back muscle as it stretches from the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae to the 12th rib. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum produces lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or elevation of the pelvis. (5) Several bridge-type exercises are being studied as to how they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s 2 layers of muscle in order for it to best add to the motor control of the lumbar pain and avert back pain. (6) Hollstrom & Associates Inc and you can discuss how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next Largo chiropractic visit to Hollstrom & Associates Inc.
