Largo PPI Use and Hip Fracture Risk

Hip fracture and GERD. We often write how everything in the body is linked. Here is another scenario. GERD or reflux symptoms drive sufferers to seek relief. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are often prescribed for many Largo reflux sufferers. Unfortunately, these PPIs may cause issues elsewhere, especially the hip for which the risk of fracture is higher, despite the fact that they help with GERD. Your Largo chiropractor closely monitors our patients who develop hip pain, especially if they are using PPIs, as oftentimes chiropractic treatment does alleviate hip pain.

PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly recommended and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The risk of hip fracture is higher in PPI users. Whether users utilize a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is greater while those on a high dose were at even more risk for hip fracture. Researchers warn that doctors and patients must know this in order to be cautious in recommending PPI use long term and be cautious in knowing what the proper use of PPIs is so that they do not take it without a clear indication for such use. (1) Researchers in a recent study of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk minced no words: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development. They begin their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on the risk of hip fracture is contestable which inspired them to study if this were true. They found participants who were over age 40 and had been prescribed PPIs for a minimum of 90 days. They then checked on any hospitalizations in these patients for hip fracture. They found that fractures developed oftentimes in PPI users than in non-users and that fracture risk associated with PPI use increased the more time they were on them. (2) Averting hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.

CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT OF HIP PAIN

Chiropractic care of the hip and hip pain can be relieving for hip pain sufferers. As Dr. Robert Hayden described in a recent Prevention magazine article, chiropractic patients who looked for care for spine, hip or shoulder pain reported less pain after 4 months than those who saw a medical doctor…and their costs were less! (3,4) Hip pain is a usual complaint heard in the chiropractic practice, especially in patients who are more than 60 years of age. Manual therapy treatments, spinal manipulation (especially gentle Cox® Technic), exercise, electrotherapy and such are common ways to treat and relieve hip pain. Hollstrom & Associates Inc will set up the proper approach to manage your Largo hip pain!
