Could a Plant Compound Work Protect Your Spine Discs?
If you've ever experienced disc-related back pain or neck pain, you understand firsthand how essential healthy spinal discs are to getting through your day through your day. Now, promising new research is examining a natural substance called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to reduce the pace of disc degeneration at the cellular level.
WHAT IS QUERCETIN?
Quercetin is a botanical compound known as a flavonoid. It's already well-regarded for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but two studies published in 2026 dug deeper into how it may directly support the health of your spinal discs.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin preserves nucleus pulposus cells — the shock-absorbing cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural shock absorbers. (1) Researchers discovered that quercetin works by reducing a specific inflammatory process and improving a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. Put simply, this supports disc cells in removing worn-out components and operating more efficiently, which may help postpone the degeneration process.
The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a distinct view. (2) Using sophisticated genetic analysis, researchers pinpointed that fibrosis — a kind of fibrous buildup — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a critical role in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin shows promise as an anti-scarring agent, meaning it may help stop this scarring process from advancing.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOU
While additional research is required before quercetin becomes a routine part of disc care, these findings add to a growing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can contribute a helpful role alongside conservative, non-surgical back care like chiropractic treatment. At Hollstrom & Associates Inc, we believe in a comprehensive approach to spinal health — combining hands-on chiropractic care with lifestyle factors that support your body's natural healing.
